Where is your passion?
So SYAC is updating with Dobson’s old avatar… except the facial hair has moved to his head. But besides that, it’s rather disappointing that he attempted to make the comic centred on a new art student back to him… complaining about his artistic troubles he’s faced. And SYAC is also infamous about he constantly contrasts himself with his roommate who worked for Disney...

Something Dobson should do for his comics
Wow, I have not updated this thing for a while. I apologize for that. Someone asked me for some tips about comic making since I just posted a link to the Patty download a while ago.
For clarification, I don’t draw comics. I illustrate but I’m not familiar with drawing comics. However, I have gathered some nice tips from EDF that can be shared with you guys (which, for some reason,...

Someone uploaded a full version of Dobson’s “Patty” - that dead link which I linked eons ago is gone so here’s something for you guys that do want to read Patty (ironically or not)

So What's New?
I missed Dobson’s livestream, unfortunately. So I present you a summarization of the discussions going on at EDF. A while back, Dobson offered to do a donation livestream in which he would produce a large Adventure Time drawing. When you are planning something like this, you have to prepare. Knowing Dobson, he always sketches it out traditionally, and has resorted to using materials which were...

You know, I’m still surprised that this blog gets followers and I might as well update with this little tidbit. For the most part, I personally do not mind if you like Dobson or his comics because you are your own person with your own likes and tastes. And I will admit that when I first started this blog in its early creation that I once held a view that was the opposite - where I believed...

... hey there, it's been a while.
So this just happened…
I haven’t been on ED or catching up on the news on Dobson lately, and I was just recently informed about this. My thoughts are: if he needs a break, then he’ll have it. I’m not too surprised by this, either.
Inevitably, after six years of dealing with issues regarding his art and attitude, he will find drawing less amusing due to his critic’s influences. Hopefully, on...

Do people really hate him for his fetishism?
Unfortunately, school and hobbyism have been distracting me from updating this blog and the website I (used to) help manage. But I might as well update with small post about something people has been asking me: “do people really hate him for his past fetishism?”
Considering the general feelings of the majority of tumblr users; the idea of “kink shaming” is generally seen in the negative light. I,...

Why do I (moi) hate Tom Andrew Preston Dowbson,...
For every person who has spent endless hours studying anatomy. For every person who has practiced over, and over again the same pose until they get good results. For every person self-aware of his/her own flaws. For every person actually putting effort into something. For each one of these people working to make this world a better place, there are a thousand more people doing exactly the...

Anonymous asked: I don't like the guy or his art and I'm not the same anon, but dude, you're obsessed and you're kind of up your own ass on this thing. There's making a point and then there's continuously making a point until you become self-indulgent. It doesn't seem genuine when you say things like "Oh he USED to be good" no he didn't, and he never will be. ...

Anonymous asked: I'm not going to say that I don't understand why you hate Andrew Dobson, I think you have made this perfectly clear. What I don't understand is your need people have to create forums, blogs, websites, or the countless groups dedicating to hate this man. Let me put this into perspective to you, Andrew Dobson is not scourge on humanity that threatens the world, he makes web comics,...

Anonymous asked: As much as I hate Dobson, if young artists are dumb enough to follow his example, I say let them. There'll be that much less competition to deal with in the industry.

Anonymous asked: To the previous anon: the key word here is "kids". Dobson is not a kid, anor has been one for decades. He had years to fix his bad habits. Instead, he decided to introduce them to a generation of younger artists as something to emulate, meaning years down the road they'll have to fix those habits too. That right there is hateable.

Anonymous asked: So it's okay for you guys to blame Andrew Dobson for giving kids advice that will make them bad artists, but when he blames someone or something for some bad drawing habits of his, that makes him conceded. Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't that a textbook example of hypocrisy and a bit petty at that?

emma-of-hearts asked: Not to you directly, but to the people that go out of their way to hate. Why do you go on his comics and comment? In fact, by doing so you're helping him. There is no such thing as 'negative' attention in the creative world, and the more comments on his stuff make it more likely to get to the front page and get more attention.

I really used to respect Tom Preston. I thought he was a pretty cool dude! I’d wake up every morning to see if he had a new comic up, because sometimes they gave me some good advice!
Boy, was I wrong.
Over time, I began to realize that his comics were…changing.
They were changing into something strange, and, at the time, I couldn’t quite pinpoint what the change was. I thought...

bullshitcockroach asked: @yewecho (if you don't mind my butting in), reaching a point and staying there is perfectly acceptable for hobbyist artists. in that capacty, you are doing your art for yourself, and what art you create and how you create it ultimately only needs to satisfy yourself. andrew dobson/tom preston isn't a hobbyist, however. he's a "professional", and when people are paying you...

0ldsp0rt asked: I'm not here to hate on Dobson but I'm curious. What did he do to garner all this hate? I know he has controversial comics like the dreaded Batman one the other day and I know people are sick of his style. But what was the final straw? When did all this hate for one person explode? As an artist I fully understand disapproving of those who stay in one place, but what if they're...

On Talent:
I’ve never liked Tom Preston/Andrew Dobson. I don’t like wish-fulfillment strawman comics. I don’t like ‘humor’ where the punchline is just another can-you-relate moment in an attempt to appeal to everyone’s latent narcissism. And I don’t like artists who have been drawing for years yet have no discernable improvement to show for it. But I never really hated him until I got to that entry re: his...

Unsettling Similarities
Andrew Dobson is Chris-Chan.
Not literally, of course. That would imply that Chris-Chan had some form of artistic talent. But I think anyone reading this will understand what I mean by the above statement, especially after his most recent comic (at this point in time).
Andrew Dobson is Chris-Chan.
The fact is, Dobson draws many parallels and strong comparisons to our favorite autistic manchild....

jackelbeaver asked: Why do you give a shit about this person's growth as an artist, especially after he's just shown himself to be the wretched piece of filth that he is? Why not dedicated a blog to helping and offering critiques to up and coming artists that Dobson might be hurting?

Aftermath
My apologies for the lack of activity again. Especially for a time in which Dobson has… pissed off a lot of people. Again with the piece I previously reblogged (with permission, of course) it points out why that comic is problematic. The general message he was trying to portray was understandable - it was the comparisons he made. Those were the problems with his comic.
Even after making...

MY INEVITABLE TWO CENTS ON PRESTON'S LATEST COMIC
zloi-medved:
Tom Preston’s recent comic, “Internet Prefaces”, has earned some (much-deserved) controversy. In case you don’t want to read it, which I understand, Preston makes a comic about the theatre shooting in Aurora, Colorado.
Let me repeat that.

To be exact, he uses the shooting as a tool to get up on his soapbox and...

Full disclosure: I live in Australia, so we haven’t had the same exposure to this event that America has had. However, one of my closest friends lives in Colorado, so he has experienced a bit more than a “tangential” backlash from this event.

Widespread Foulness
Hello, recently I came upon foreverpandering’s video rant on his shared and personal disagreements with the artist in question, Andrew Dobson http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QT4h86Ns1Cs&feature=plcp. I found myself amazed at the amount of effort put into this video and I even felt a bit bad for Dobson. That did not last long. A couple minutes in pandering brings up some replies from...

Negative Critiques
adobsonart:
I’ve gotten a lot of people telling me that art critiques are only supposed to be negative and you’re never supposed to say anything positive, because that is equal to ass-kissing. How very sad and depressing life must be for those people, never being able to enjoy positive reinforcement. And how horrible for those young budding artists who are still not confident with their art,...

Andrew Dobson on /ic/ →
I wake up to check the EDF and see that… Dobson actually goes to a critique thread? Of course, this was after his line art/colouring journal has attracted a number of people telling him to continue striving for critique.
NSFW just like some of my links posted here.

Anonymous asked: You know what really bothers me about TomPreston's lineart? He could easily fix some of it's sloppiness by running it through Inkscape and have that create less wobbly vector lines over his normal work. His normal lineart and coloring isn't good, but the fact that he can't take 3 minutes to greatly improve the quality is just lazy. The method I describe isn't even that...

The Virtues of Responsibility
So, after reading this recent tantrum on why Preston’s tutorials are totally right and everyone else is just being angry for no reason because, “HURRR HATERS GONNA HATE AMIRITE?!” and other non-answers to the legitimate criticisms weighed against his techniques and skills, I remembered specifically why I hate Tom Preston: It’s because he thinks that nothing is ever his...

friendlytroll asked: Copy print paper is very thin, and very cheaply made! It's not made to last long, or to take- you know. Pencils. The surface quality and thickness of paper changes how you can draw on or erase off of paper. Printer paper causes smudges, you cant erase it often, and tends to age very fast. It also has no 'tooth', or texture made to grab and hold the graphite. Printer paper works......

Can I tell the tale of how I came to dislike TomPreston? I seriously thought I was part of a minority until I got on Tumblr, and finding this blog actually made me remember the story.
It takes a bit of explaining, but basically, I used to half-follow him for a while (no point actually hitting the watch button because everything ends up on the front page anyway) Some of his work got a little laugh...

Today's Achievement: Recognition
Just came back from the movies today and I realized that Dobson himself has reblogged the previous “Try bending your pinky like that”. Actually, all of the responses to that post are seriously putting a smile on my face. In case you guys are interested I can do that “gesture”.
The problem is that was that doing said gesture was uncomfortable. Even with my ability to do that I would rather have...

So, I just thought I would talk about a few things to wrap up some loose ends. The first is my Obama picture. I sent the picture to my parents, who thought it was great. So You Can't Take Advice?
I’m going to assume that his inability to listen to critique is well known even for those asking “why do people hate Tom Preston?” However allow me to expand a bit on that in regards to SYAC. Admittedly I do have pretty low expectations since I am going to assume that he spends about five minutes or less drawing out the comic and less than 15 minutes on scanning it and tweaking it in Photoshop....
